Fasting for Allah (swt) is a beautiful form of worship, with phenomenal spiritual benefits every Muslim is familiar with. But the benefits of fasting extend beyond the spiritual; boosting our health and physical wellbeing as well. That, to us, is testament that Allah’s wisdom and blessings are boundless, and is one more reason (out of the many millions of reasons) to be grateful to Him.

30 Day Ramadan Fast: What happens to your body?
Detoxification Stage 1: Day 1-2
Stage 1 of detoxification begins on the first day of fasting, which we all know is the hardest. Your body will enter into a fasting state approximately eight hours after your last meal. This is when your gut completes the absorption of the remaining nutrients from your food. Your blood sugar drops, your heart slows down and your blood pressure reduces.
Symptoms of this initial cleanse include:
- Dizziness and nausea
- Bad breath and a heavily coated tongue
- Weakness caused by the drawing of glycogen from your muscles
Detoxification Stage 2: Day 3-7
During your first fasting week, you will feel sluggish and tired because your body is working harder that usual. Without food for energy, the first thing your body will use up is the glucose stored in your liver and muscles.
When the glucose runs out, your body will start using up fat for energy. It will start breaking down fat to release glycerol which is converted to glucose. Purging rancid oils from the body can make your skin more oily than usual, resulting in spots or even a boil.
As your body embraces the fast, your digestive system will get to take a much needed rest, allowing it to cleanse and repair itself. Faeces stuck to the intestinal walls will start to loosen. Your lungs and other cleansing organs will also begin a process of healing. Your immune system will be more active than normal at this time.
The burning of fat for energy aids weight loss and lowers your cholesterol levels in the long run. Weight loss results in better control of diabetes and also reduces blood pressure.
Detoxification Stage 3: Day 8-15
The second fasting week will see us into the third stage of detoxification. You will begin to experience clear mindedness and a boost of energy.
Fasting gives your body a greater ability to heal. Don’t be surprised if you find old wounds and injuries become irritated! As your body heals, lymphocytes look for secrete substances to dissolve damaged cells in the damaged tissue. These substances can irritate nerves in the surrounding areas causing aches.
The pain you feel is good since it means scars that healed badly (perhaps due to a poor lifestyle in the past) are now undergoing optimum healing. Muscles may also become tight or sore due to toxin irritation. You will likely get mouth ulcers since we have a lot of bacteria in our mouths. To avoid or heal mouth ulcers, gargle with salt and water daily.
Detoxification Stage 4: Day 16-30
The last stage of detoxification happens in the final two weeks of fasting and this is when you feel best. There will be short periods of cleansing in between many good days where you have lots of energy. You’ll find your breath is fresher and your tongue is pink.
Your body has now completely adapted to fasting and is completing its work on healing your organs. After day 20, even your mind feels the benefits as higher levels endorphins appear in the blood. You will notice increased alertness and an overall feeling of general wellbeing along with:
- Heightened clarity
- Emotional balance
- Improved memory
- Improved concentration
