New Operation Theaters at Shaukat Khanum

The construction of four new operation theatres in Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre at Lahore is in process. The First new operation theater will start functioning within few months and all four of them would be operational within the next couple of years, taking the total to eight theaters. It will significantly enhance the capacity to perform more surgical procedures. At present, SKMCH has four modern operation theaters. In the last two decades, the patient intake has increased considerably and the operation theater surgeons and anaesthetists have to work late in the evenings and over the weekends to cope with the workload. The opening of these new theaters will greatly improve the quality of service hospital provides to its patients and will also mean less onerous working hours for the staff.

The operation theaters with be equipped with the highest standard of medical equipment to carry out safe and advanced surgical procedures. SKMCH&RC will also be opening its first modular operation theater for advanced laparoscopic surgery. Complex laparoscopic surgical procedures have been performed at SKMCH&RC for the last few years. The benefits of such procedures include not only smaller scars, but significantly reduced pain, rapid recovery and discharge which eventually reduce the demand for in-patient beds. With laparoscopic surgery, it is now possible to operate on parts of the body which were not amenable to conventional surgery. With the addition of this new modular laparoscopic operation theater, the surgeons will be able to perform more complex procedures in a much shorter duration, which will further enhance operation capacity.

The completion of these new operating theaters is part of Hospital’s commitment to continue to enhance and expand its services.
