BELIEVE IN BARAKAH THIS DHUL HIJJAH

Barakah refers to a blessing or increase from Allah (SWT). It brings peace, ease, and unexpected good.

Here are ten ways to increase its flow this Dhul Hijjah, based on the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah.

1. GREET OTHERS WITH SINCERITY – INVITE BARAKAH INTO YOUR DAY

Barakah is an Arabic word. It stems from the root ‘B-r-k’, which means ‘to kneel down’ or ‘descend’.

When we greet others with ‘Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahamatullahi Wa barakatahu‘, ‘Mashallah barikallah‘, or ‘Mubarak‘, we are asking for a special blessing from Allah (SWT) to descend on them and remain with them.

If you’ve ever seen a camel kneel, you’ll know that when Barakah settles, it stays!

When we sincerely ask Allah (SWT) to bless others, those blessings return to our own day too.

2. TRUST IN ALLAH (SWT) IS THE FOUNDATION OF BARAKAH

Allah (SWT) says: “I am to my slave as he thinks of Me, [ie. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him].” (Bukhari)

Allah (SWT) says: “Put your trust in Allah, and sufficient is Allah as a disposer of affairs.” (Quran 33:3)

In Islam, trust in Allah (SWT) is the foundation of faith. When faced with a challenge, the Qur’an encourages us to do our best and leave the outcome to Him. He alone is the source of Barakah and He alone will provide what we need. Find more inspiration in the story of Qurbani.

3. START THE DAY EARLY: A PRACTICE THAT BRINGS BARAKAH

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “O Allah, bless my nation in their early mornings [ie. what they do early in the morning].”
(Sunan Ibn Majah)

Early mornings are the key to success for many high performers. The Prophet (ﷺ) prayed for Barakah on activities completed at this time. Starting the day early can bring peace, productivity, and blessings. Is it time to update your morning routine?

4. GIVE SADAQAH TO GROW BARAKAH

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Charity does not, in any way, decrease the wealth […].” (Muslim)

It may be hard to understand how giving can lead to increase, but Sadaqah given with sincerity invites Barakah.

5. Bismillah: A Simple Way to Barakah

Start the day by saying ‘Bismillah’. This Arabic phrase means ‘in the name of Allah (SWT)’. Many hadiths remind us of the importance of saying it before beginning a task. By following this practice, we invite Allah’s (SWT) guidance, support, and Barakah into what we do.

6. Family As A Source Of Barakah

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “He who wishes to have his earnings grow [and be blessed] and his term of life prolonged, he should keep ties with his kin.” (Al-Bukhari)

If you ever needed a reason to prioritise family, here it is! This hadith encourages balance, spend time with loved ones while also looking after your own needs.

When we honour our family ties, Allah (SWT) places Barakah in our earnings, our health, and the time we’re given.

7. GRATITUDE (SHUKR) INCREASES BARAKAH

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favour]”. (Holy Qur’an 14:7)

Saying ‘Alhamdulillah’ often and reflecting on the blessings we already have opens the door to more Barakah.

Complete Shukr carries a quiet humility, as we accept that no amount of gratitude can ever match the mercy Allah (SWT) has shown us.

8. Eating Together: A Sunnah With Barakah

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Eat together and do not eat separately, for the blessing is in being together”. (Ibn Majah)

Mealtimes are more than moments to nourish the body, they’re small anchors in the rhythm of our days, and carriers of memory.

Maybe this is the moment to reset old habits: sharing meals without screens, where conversation flows more easily, and connection comes more naturally.

9. SEND ONE SALAWAT – RECEIVE TENFOLD BARAKAH

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If anyone invokes blessings on me once, Allah will bless him ten times.” (Abu Dawud)

Each time we send Salawat, Allah (SWT) returns ten blessings. It’s one of the simplest ways to invite Barakah into our day.

Various hadiths also emphasise the reward of including Salawat as part of our daily Dhikr (remembrance).

Say it while walking, waiting, working — wherever you are. A few seconds, ten returns.

10. CHOOSE HALAL: FROM TRANSACTIONS TO DAILY ACTIONS

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Both parties in a business transaction have a right to annul it so long as they have not separated; and if they tell the truth and make everything clear to each other they will be blessed in their transaction, but if they conceal anything and lie, the blessing on their transaction will be eliminated”. (Muslim)

Observing halal goes beyond choosing the right butcher; it means honesty in our dealings and upholding the rights of others.

At work, it means being punctual, offering a fair exchange, and accepting setbacks with trust in Allah (SWT).

At school, it means following rules, completing homework with care, and avoiding behaviours that go against Islamic teachings.

When we choose halal, Allah (SWT) adds Barakah to our actions, our earnings, and our efforts.
