Shaukat Khanum JCI Enterprise Accreditation

Shaukat Khanum is recognised for global excellence. How did it achieve this, and what does it mean for donations made through Imran Khan Cancer Appeal?

Shaukat Khanum is the first institution in Pakistan, and the second in the world, to hold JCI Enterprise Accreditation. This global recognition reflects decades of standards built together through your continued support.

Read on to see how your generosity created safety and dignity for people in need, and how it will help extend those standards to Karachi.

JCI Enterprise Accreditation: Built on 31 Years of Support

From the beginning, Shaukat Khanum aimed to support around 75% of those it served through Zakat and other charitable donations. Thanks to the continued trust of our supporters, this level has been maintained for more than 31 years.

Being funded through charity has never meant lower standards for those who benefit from this support.

The Joint Commission International (JCI) is an independent organisation based in Chicago. It sets global benchmarks for how institutions like Shaukat Khanum are run. Organisations that meet these standards are recognised for their quality, safety, and management.

For Shaukat Khanum, the path to meeting these standards began in 1994.

  • 1994: Shaukat Khanum Lahore opens its doors on December 29, 1994.
  • 2004: The organisation begins taking formal steps toward JCI Accreditation by strengthening systems, policies, and staff training.
  • 2007, 2008, and 2011: Teams take part in mock audits led by Aga Khan University. Their application to Chicago is delayed due to travel restrictions.
  • 2015: Shaukat Khanum Peshawar opens, building on the same commitment as Lahore. An idea for a third facility in Karachi is discussed.
  • 2017: A second application is made to JCI as travel restrictions ease.
  • 2018: Shaukat Khanum Lahore receives JCI Accreditation for the first time.
  • 2019: Shaukat Khanum Peshawar receives JCI Accreditation for the first time.
  • 2021: Lahore is awarded JCI Re-Accreditation.
  • 2022: Peshawar is awarded JCI Re-Accreditation.
  • 2022: Shaukat Khanum achieves JCI Enterprise Accreditation across its network, including early support provided in Karachi. It is the first institution in Pakistan and the second in the world to do so.

Together, these achievements show how your donations through Imran Khan Cancer Appeal continue to make a difference to those who rely on these facilities.

Shaukat Khanum Karachi: The Next Chapter

Thanks to your generosity, a Walk-in Clinic began serving the local community in Karachi in May 2023. The main facility is set to open in December 2026. Covering one million square feet, it will be twice the size of Shaukat Khanum Lahore and will operate under the same global standards of excellence.

The countdown is on to December 2026. Join our race to the finish line.

We would like to reassure our donors that Shaukat Khanum accounts are operating as normal, with no restrictions in place. Our founder is unable to make an appeal for the completion of Shaukat Khanum Karachi this year. With your donations, we can finish the project and continue helping those who rely on our support across Pakistan.
