Qurbani Checklist

QURBANI PRICING CHECKLIST

As Eid ul-Adha approaches, many charities are offering Qurbani deals. While it’s great to have lots of choice available, it’s important to take more than just the cost into account to ensure the validity of your sacrifice. Here are some key factors to consider while you shop around.

HAVE I DONE MY RESEARCH?

Making the right decision when it comes to entrusting our Qurbani to a charity is an important task. We need to ensure that the organisation we pick is committed to upholding the highest standards of Shari’ah, as the validity of our sacrifice could otherwise be compromised.

Unfortunately, to attract a greater number of orders, many charities can end up creating a ‘race to the bottom’ by offering cut-price deals. While discounts are tempting, we need to make sure that the animal and the slaughterhouse we select meet the special conditions of the Sunnah and the Shari’ah ruling on halal.

So, while it may take longer, let’s do our research and select an organisation that is reliable and trustworthy, even if it means paying a bit more.

DOES MY QURBANI REFLECT PROPHETIC EXAMPLES?

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) wanted to offer a sacrifice, he brought two large, fat, horned, black-and-white, castrated rams. He slaughtered one on behalf of his nation […] and he slaughtered the other on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad (ﷺ). (Sunan Ibn Majah)

The Prophet (ﷺ) lived a humble life and would often go hungry for days. Nonetheless, many hadiths describe that when it came to Eid ul-Adha, he gave the best of what he had, offering two animals that were fat, valuable and of the finest pedigree and setting an example for us to do the same.

Therefore, when choosing a Qurbani deal, let us strive to follow the Messenger of Allah (SWT) and give the best of what we have. Why not double our reward and book two Qurbani’s instead of one?

DOES MY QURBANI REFLECT MY SINCERITY?

And recite to them the story of Adam’s two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], “I will surely kill you.” Said [the former], “Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him]”. (Holy Qur’an 5:27)

When it comes to the story of Qurbani, many of us may think of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son Ismail (AS). However, did you know that the sons of Prophet Adam (AS) were actually the first to offer Qurbani to Allah (SWT)?

The story of Habil and Qabil teaches us an important lesson. When making their sacrifice, Habil chose the best of his animals and did it with a sincere heart, while Qabil wasn’t generous at all. As a result, Habil’s sacrifice was accepted, and Qabil’s wasn’t.

So, when choosing our Qurbani, let’s ask ourselves whether our sincerity matches that of the people whose sacrifices were accepted by Allah (SWT). And Allah (SWT) knows our intentions best.
